CALENDAR TO MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT
25 JANUARY 1996
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry recently released a colourful calendar for 1996 with the theme "MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT". This theme is central to the National Water Conservation Campaign and builds upon last year's theme, "Count every drop," to emphasise a strong water conservation message. This name will be carried through to National Water Week which will be from 17 to 23 March 1996, with World Water Day on 22 March.
This striking calendar depicts drought with all its devastation as well as water well managed to the benefit of all, including the environment. The Water crisis in South Africa is chronic. To counter this problem all water users will have to "MAKE EVERY DROP COUNT". One good rainy season will only alleviate the situation. In the long-term awareness must be raised and behaviour patterns changed to ensure that future water managers and users consider water conservation in all they do.
During National Water Week schools, environmental organisations and concerned institutions can make a contribution by organising functions, talks and water sports events, through which healthy water conservation messages and habits can be established.
Water forms the basis for all development. The National Water Conservation Campaign has as its primary goal the equitable, efficient and sustainable supply and use of water in South Africa.
The calendar is available free of charge upon written request from the Department, Private Bag X313, Pretoria, 0001. It is also available at the Department's Regional Offices.
