PRESS STATEMENT OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATIONS OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ON THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW SABC BOARD
The mandate of the Board of the SABC expires in May 1996. This means a new Board of the SABC will have to be in place by May this year unless measures are taken to extend the duration of the Board in orderm to allow for the appointment process to take its course.
The creation of a new Public Broadcasting System in a new broadcasting dispensation in South Africa means that the appointment of a new SABC Board is not merely the substitution of individuals with others or confirmation of others. The new SABC Board ill have to be re-conceived as an institution so that it reflects and is consistent with the new broadcasting dispensation.
Advertisement calling for nominations of prospective board members of the SABC will appear in the National Media in a couple of weeks. Organisations, groups and individuals who want to make nominations should prepare themselves. The adverts will include some of the criteria that will be relevant for membership of the new SABC Board.
We would however, like to encourage all Sectors of Society who are ready to send in their nominations to:
The Chairperson Portfolio Committee on Communications c/o Mr Masibulele Xaso P.O. Box 15 CAPE TOWN, 8000
The nominations should be accompanied by a letter of acceptance by the individual who is being nominated. Comments on the structure of the new SABC Board will also be welcomed by the Portfolio Committee on Communications.
