INJAKA DAM IN NORTHERN PROVINCE TO BRING WATER RELIEF 22 JANUARY 1996
The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has recently handed over the site for the construction of the Injaka Dam in the Northern Province to the contractors, Savage and Lovemore (Eastern Cape) Pty. Ltd. The contract value is R147 million.
The Injaka Dam will be constructed on the Marite River, a major tributary of the Sabie River in the Mapulaneng district near Bushbuck Ridge on the border between the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The 550m dam wall is scheduled for completion towards the end of 1999. The total capacity of the dam will be 123 million cubic metres after completion. The main purpose for the construction of the dam is to provide water for domestic use to the semi-urban and the rural communities of the Mapulaneng, Mhala and the Nzikazi North areas.
The water released from the dam will augment the flow in the Sabie River during periods of low flow. The pumping station at the dam, when completed, and a rising main will deliver water to the adjacent Sand River watershed by a transfer pipe line.
ALthough this project was not initiated before the RDP principles became policy, it fully incorporates these principles.
