FROM DIRECTOR GENERAL - NORTH WEST PROVINCE
The North West province Department of Education is expecting a shortfall of R150 million in teachers' salaries. This is mainly due to poor information about the numbers of teachers on the payroll, inherited from the former Bophuthatswana government.
However, no cash flow problems are being experienced, or expected, during the current financial year.
This was said in a statement from the office of the North West Director General , Mr Job Mokgoro, today. He was responding to reports about a Money Crisis in the province.
The numbers of teachers were finalised and the province was then faced with a shortfall of about R150 million instead of R800 million.
Mr Mokgoro was adamant the province would continue to manage its funds efficiently.
During the first seven months of the current financial year, the province spent only 51 percent of its R6,300 million budget instead of the expected 59 percent.
The North West provincial administration is therefore well within the approved budget, Mr Mokgoro pointed out.
If necessary, the North West would impose further control measures to ensure it did not exceed the budget for the current financial year.
He added certain committees had been set up to monitor spending.
