ANC GAUTENG PRESS STATEMENT ON PROVINCIAL CONSTITUTIONAL INDABA

The African National Congress in the Gauteng Province will be having a major Constitutional Conference from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 January 1996. Two hundred delegates from the ANC and alliance format.

The constitutional conference to be held this weekend, is a culmination of a series of workshops held in all six regions in the province. This conference will afford the ANC and its alliance the opportunity to give direct input into the development of the final constitution. The organisation has set up Regional Constitutional Commissions which will, among others, sustain the constitutional debate and broaden the participation of communities to ensure that the ANC's inputs reflect the wishes of the people as a whole.

The conference will be opened by ANC Secretary-General and Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly (CA), Cyril Ramaphosa - who will brief delegates on the critical issues confronting the constitution-making process in the country. Comrade cyril will be accompanied by a high-powered team of ANC constitutional negotiators from the CA, who will facilitate 7 commissions that will meet the whole day on Saturday and report to plenary on Sunday 21st.

The plenary on Sunday will finalise proposals for submission to the ANC's National Constitutional Commission, which will in turn, organise a national conference to finalise ANC proposals for the final constitution.

Major points of focus for conference, will be, inter alia:

i) Property clause ii) Local government and traditional leaders iii) Socio-economic rights iv) Council of provinces/senate v) Size of parliament

The conference will be closed by the ANC Provincial Chairperson, Tokyo Sexwale.
