GAUTENG PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE RETURN FROM RECESS

MEDIA STATEMENT

The 86 members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature return from recess on 22 January 1996 and will be attending the various meetings of the 16 Standing Committees. Some of the meetings have already been scheduled, and details are available in the diary that follows. The Third Legislative Year opens on 23 February when the first Sitting of the House for 1996, takes place.

Meanwhile, from 22 to 26 January 1996, the Gauteng Legislature will be hosting the first southern Africa Workshop of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), where Members of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, will be attending. Also present will be Members of South Africa's National Parliament from Cape Town, as well as MPLs from the 9 provincial Legislatures in the country. The Workshop will be aiming at achieving an advancement in democratic parliamentary practice.

Issued to be discussed include: 1. Relations with the Media; 2. Public participation in the Legislative process; 3. Party organisation within Parliament; 4. History and role of the CPA; and 5. Role of the Speaker and staff of Parliament.

The "Gauteng Parliamentary Association" (GPA), the provincial branch of the CPA, has been formed, and below are members of its Executive Committee:
