MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE REGIONAL LAND CLAIMS COMMISSIONER FOR WESTERN AND NORTHERN CAPE ON EXTENSION OF THE TIME PERIOD FOR SUBMISSION OF LAND CLAIMS IN DISTRICT SIX
The period for the submission of claims for the restitution of land rights in District Six has been extended by 90 days. Potential claimants are requested to submit claims for this area before 29 February 1996.
In a statement issued today by the Regional Land Claims Commissioner for Western and Northern Cape, Adv Wallace Mgoqi, attention is drawn to an official notice that was published in the Government Gazette on 29 December 1995 in terms of which the period for the submission for claims has been extended.
All potential claimants are requested to submit claims as soon as possible. The notice is only applicable to persons who have not yet submitted restitution claims for District Six to the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights.
In August 1995 it was announced that all claims for the restitution of land rights in the area would be handled as a single claim as the Commission was of the opinion that the resources of the Commission and of the Land Claims Court would be more effectively utilised if all claims for the area could be investigated at the same time.
Claimants were given until the end of November 1995 to submit claims, but there is reason to believe that not all potential claimants have submitted claims. This delay in claims being submit- ted is affecting the restitution process and persons with justi- fiable claims who do not submit such claims by 29 February will not be able to participate in the negotiation process due to start soon.
