Issued by: Department of Water Affairs and Forestry
29 DECEMBER 1995
Vaal Dam's level has risen to 95,7% and the inflow is receding. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry has decided to open no further crest gates in order to allow the dam to fill to 100%. The Vaal Dam should reach this mark by tomorrow. The public is however warned that the position may change with heavy rain in the Vaal River Catchment. According to the Weather Bureau the possibility of rain over the weekend is remote.
In total six gates will have been opened. This is in addition to the river outlet which continuously lets out enough water to maintain normal river flow.
It is requested that the public refer to the Department for correct information on dam and river levels. Rumours are rife and incorrect information can inconvenience people and even lead to dangerous situations.
It is necessary to store as much water as possible in the Vaal River System to bridge the next two years to allow Sterkfontein Dam to be filled by pumping and to complete the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
