STATEMENT ON ATTACKS ON POLICE RESERVISTS IN TEMBISA

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

The Gauteng Ministry of Safety and Security has held urgent talks with police officials in a bid to halt orchestrated attacks on police reservists in Tembisa and to get to the bottom of the problem.

Since early evening on Saturday December 23, three police reservists have been killed and another two seriously injured. All these attacks have taken place in a fairly small area within Tembisa.

The MEC for Safety and Security, Jessie Duarte, has requested the Gauteng Police Commissioner's office to institute a top level inquiry into the attacks.

In addition, a representative of the Ministry today met the Tembisa station commissioner and community leaders to discuss ways of heading off further attacks. It was agreed that visible policing would be stepped up as a deterrent measure.

The Ministry wishes to reiterate its commitment to dealing with the killers of community members who, as reservists, selflessly join hands with the police to patrol and safeguard their neighbourhoods.
