MEDIA STATEMENT
Gauteng Member of the Provincial Legislature and Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Transport and Roads, Dr Mathole Motshekga, responds to a report in today's edition of Business Day, wherein and Member of the Provincial Legislature, Mr Peter Leon, is quoted as saying Dr Motshekga's metropolitan policing task team had achieved nothing since its formation.
"I find the allegation by Peter Leon that a Metropolitan Policing Task Team led by myself had achieved nothing since it was formed in May, a gross misrepresentation and an irresponsible attempt to mislead the public. Leon as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and Security, had a duty and responsibility to find out what is happening in this area of work, and to inform the public correctly. He is trying to cover up his neglect of duty by alleging that I and my Committee have achieved nothing".
"If Leon had made an effort to find out the truth of the matter by approaching me, he would have known that I was merely earmarked by the MEC of Public Safety and Security to head the Committee. I have neither been formally appointed, nor have I formally accepted any such appointment. I find it strange that Leon expects me to have done the work for which I had no mandate".
"As a politician he reserved the right to seek to score political points, but that should not be done through gross misrepresentation on such a sensitive matter affecting the lives and security of the people."
