TRANSFORMING PUBLIC ENTERPRISES - SERVING SA BETTER

Issued by: Ministry for Public Enterprises

MEDIA RELEASE BY MS S N SIGCAU, MINISTER FOR PUBLIC ENTERPRISES, CONCERNING RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RESTRUCTURING PROCESS - 19 DECEMBER 1995.

TRANSFORMING PUBLIC ENTERPRISES - SERVING SOUTH AFRICA BETTER

The Government wishes to reassure the public and the rest of the labour movement in terms of its commitment to the agreed development of the National Framework Agreement which will sufficiently accommodate the concerns of the labour movement in respect of restructuring of state assets within the context of RDP. Good progress has been made in respect of negotiations towards the National Framework Agreement and that process is on track.

It is important to note that all parties, both labour and Government, agree on the restructuring of state assets so that the state enterprises are in a position to become world class organisations to serve South Africa better by providing quality products and affordable services to all South Africans.

Any restructuring in South Africa has to take place within the context of the established Reconstruction and Development Programme. The Government is resolute in ensuring that the process of restructuring will be pursued in a manner that is incontestably transparent and participative in nature while underpinned by the broadest possible national consensus. It should be emphasised that the Government is in no way deviating from the process it has already outlined.
