DR GEORGE LINDEQUE APPOINTED TO STEER THE REFORM PROCESS OF INLAND REVENUE AND CUSTOMS AND EXCISE

Dr George Lindeque, recently retired Executive Director of Growth and Development at Eskom, has been appointed to head up the project that will see Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise transformed into one South African Revenue Service (SARS). Dr Lindeque is also Chairman of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund and of the Graduate School of Business at PU for CHE. He has been appointed on a contract basis to manage the initial implementation of the reform process.

Dr Lindeque will head up the internal reform project team. This team, consisting of expertise from within and outside the Department of Finance and representative employee organisations, has been busy over the past four months laying the foundation for the implementation of Cabinet's decision to transform CE & IR into a new SARS, which will be run along business lines, with its own Board and Chief Executive Officer. The CEO position was advertised recently, and applications are currently being considered. Dr Lindeque's appointment in no way affects that process.

Dr Lindeque was in Eskom's employ for 20 years. He served as Executive Director (Human Resources) for nine years, playing a key role in shaping HR management in Eskom. He was the recipient of the 1993 IPM Human Resource Practitioner award. He brings to this assignment vast experience in the fields of training, development, industrial relations, affirmative action and strategic positioning. As project leader, Dr Lindeque's task will be to co-ordinate all actions relating to the formation of the new SARS. According to current planning, the new SARS is due to launched in April 1996, by which time Dr Lindeque will be able to scale down his involvement.
