SOUTH AFRICA AND CANADA SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING ON DEVELOPMENT CO-OPERATION

A general Memorandum of Understanding on development co-operation between South Africa and Canada will be signed in Pretoria on Wednesday (13/12/95) by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Aziz Pahad and Canadian High Commissioner Mr Arthur Perron.

The agreement will facilitate government-to-government development assistance, previously the preserve of non-governmental organisations.

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will be the official representative of the Canadian Government, facilitating both governmental and non-governmental development and project participation with the South African Government.

The agreement will promote broad programmes of development co-operation; the granting of fellowships for studies and professional training in Canada and South Africa; exchanges of personnel and expertise; the execution of projects or activities by private Canadian firms in association with South Africa partners in the public and private sectors and the general encouragement and promotion of relations between institutions, businesses and individuals.

NOTE: Media representatives are invited to attend a photo opportunity at the signing of the agreement in Room 230 (A), Union Buildings, Pretoria at 12h00 on Wednesday.
