MEDIA RELEASE BY THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE MINERAL POLICY PROCESS STEERING COMMITTEE
A public meeting was held in Pretoria yesterday under the chairmanship of Mr Marcel Golding, who chairs the tri-partite Mineral Policy Steering Committee responsible for managing the consultative process of reviewing South Africa's minerals and mining policy.
Interested parties were invited to comment on the Discussion Document on Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa which was released in November. Submissions may take the form of a statement of a vision for Minerals Policy in not more than 1200 words, or it may be presented as detailed comments on the discussion document. In response to requests from several delegates, it was decided to extend the deadline for comments from 15 to 30 January 1996. Copies of the discussion document are available from offices of the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs, or where these do not exist, from offices of the National Union of Mineworkers.
Proposals for issues on which workshops should be held were made to the public meeting. The meeting added to these proposals and decided that two workshops on related topics should be held under the broad themes of legal rights and public policy. Details of these workshops, scheduled for March 1996, will be announced later in December.
