The Office of the President has noted the reports in the media this morning about concerns that were raised by the South African Agricultural Union in a meeting with the President in August this year.
The President was also concerned to learn that the Ministers Committee which was decided on in the meeting has not convened yet. Last week he instructed his Director General to enquire from the Minister of Agriculture why the meeting had not taken place.
In the discussions which ensued between the Minister of Agriculture, DR Kraai van Niekerk and the Director General of the Office of the President, Professor Jakes Gerwel, it was agreed that Professor Gerwel will assist the Minister in convening the meeting early in 1996.
President Mandela appreciates the important role the farming community is playing in the South African economy and wants to find an effective solution to the problems raised.
