GAUTENG MEC CALLS FOR TOUGH ACTION AGAINST WESTBURY GANGSTERS

Gauteng's MEC for Safety & Security, Ms Jessie Duarte, has instructed provincial police commissioner General Sharma Maharaj to ensure that police take tough action in response to the killing of eight people in Westbury outside Johannesburg on Friday night.

"I have directed the provincial commissioner to make sure that the police take tough and uncompromising action against gangs operating in the area," Ms Duarte said today (Saturday).

"I have also directed the deputy provincial commissioner, General Barry van der Walt, to take specific action by cordoning off the affected part of Westbury and declaring it an unrest area.

"To resolve this issue, the police will have to look seriously at searching houses and vehicles. They must rid the area of illegal weapons.

"If they do take such action, they will have my unequivocal support. We need tough action against the perpetrators of these murders."
