Dear Hauwa Saro-Wiwa
I have asked Archbishop Tutu to bring to you this expression, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Government of National Unity of South Africa, of our heartfelt condolences on your tragic loss.
The cruel and callous execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa, along with the other eight activists for Ogoni rights, outraged us all. For me personally it was a deep shock, and a bitter disappointment that our efforts and those of others had failed to avert this terrible deed.
We know that for you and your family, the pain is deep. But please know that we share your grief and that our thoughts are with you. Be assured that the example of Ken's courage will fortify us in our resolve to work for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria.
