Upon request by members of the media, the Department providing a regular calender of forthcoming events in South Africa and abroad which would be of interest to the media and the general public.

This is the third calender which has been compiled by members of this Department. They rely on inputs from various sectors such as the media itself, the South African missions abroad, and the respective organisers of events of which the Department has been informed. It is released on a monthly basis.

CALENDAR OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS FOR DECEMBER 1995 AND JANUARY 1996

DECEMBER 1: WORLD WIDE: World AIDS Day

DECEMBER 3: WORLD WIDE: International Day of Disabled Persons.

DECEMBER 3-7: SOUTH AFRICA: 11th Triennial Conference of Commonwealth Health Ministers in Somerset West with the theme "Women and Health". Representatives of 51 member states to attend the conference.

DECEMBER 3-10: SOUTH AFRICA: 7th International Rainbow week to be held in Cape Town. This a triangular event consisting of a Children's Gathering, an Exhibition and a Symposium each with a specific theme. The overall theme is "CHILDREN - THE KEY TO THE FUTURE". DECEMBER 4-6: SOUTH AFRICA: Visit to SA by Vice President, Al Gore for the USA/SA Bi-National Commission.

DECEMBER 4-6: AUSTRALIA: The Australian National Trade and Investment Outlook Conference in Melbourne. Minister T Manuel and 8 South African key business leaders will attend the conference. Eight countries will participate.

DECEMBER 4-6: SOUTH AFRICA: Visit to SA by the Premier of Greenland, Mr LE Johannessen.

DECEMBER 5: BELGIUM: Fourth negotiating session on a long term trade and cooperation agreement between South Africa and the European Union, as well as a Protocol on the terms and conditions of SA's accession to the Lome Convention in Brussels.

DECEMBER 10: NORWAY: Award ceremony for the Nobel peace prize in Oslo.

DECEMBER 14-15: THAILAND: Fifth ASEAN summit in Bangkok. The summit will review the successes achieved in regional developments and promote the ongoing integration of the south-east Asian 10, to which Thailand is committed.

DECEMBER 26: SOUTH AFRICA: (PUBLIC HOLIDAY) South African Day of Goodwill

JANUARY 13 - SOUTH AFRICA: African Cup of Nations FEBRUARY 3: Soccer Tournament to be held in Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

JANUARY 18-19: SOUTH AFRICA: Ministerial (SA & EU) review of negotiations on the long term trade and cooperation agreement between SA and the EU, as well as the protocol on the terms and conditions of SA's accession to the Lome Convention.

JANUARY 22-26: SOUTH AFRICA: International Astronomical Conference on Intergalactic Dust will be held at the Univ of the Witwatersrand. The aim of the conference is to focus on changing perceptions of the morphology, dust content and dust-to-gas ratios in galaxies. This will be the largest astronomical conference ever to be hosted in SA. President Mandela to address a banquet during the conference.

JANUARY 22 - SOUTH AFRICA: 1996 SADC Consultative FEBRUARY 7: Conference at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.
