THE PROCESS OF POLLING BEGAN AT 08H00

Issued by: Gauteng Local Government and Housing Minister

The process of polling effectively began at 8h00 without any serious hickups this morning. The problems experienced by the returning officers so far has been mainly people who came to polling stations and their names did not appear on the voters rolls.

Polling is began in time in areas that include Bronberg, Hammanskraal, Kaffersgat, Devon, Roodeplaat. Vischkuil, Pienaarsriver and Suikerbosrand is continuing smoothly.

In Bronberg several people have been reported to have been unhappy because their names do not appear on the voter's roll. The Returning Officer then gave them new registration forms to complete, and those will be used in the next elections.

Due to the storm underway in Roodeplaat, radio communications with officials there has been difficult. But an average of about hundred people who are said to be in the area are yet to cast their votes when the rain subsides

"We appeal to Returning Officers to double check people's names with the Regional Services Council officers on stand by before sending them away," says Mr Dan Mofokeng. If people want to check their names on the computerised roll they must feel free to call.

Gauteng Local Government and Housing Minister Mr Dan Mofokeng says he is satisfied with the rate of polling. He says: "We are completing the wall to wall local elections process in the province, we call on all our people to go out in their large numbers and exercise the hard earned franchise so that democratically elected local authorities should be in place today."
