The Gauteng Cabinet has approved the establishment of a special police patrol unit for the province.
The plan proposes the establishment of a special fleet of 100 police vehicles to bolster existing Flying Squad units.
More details will be announced next week by the MECs for Safety & Security and Economics & Finance.
The plan was one of four key issues discussed at a meeting of the provincial cabinet in Johannesburg yesterday (Wednesday 22 November).
ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT
Yesterday's cabinet meeting also approved an offer of assistance from the Danish environmental agency DANCED, which forms part of the Danish Ministry of Environment and Energy. DANCED will provide R6,5-million worth of assistance to Gauteng's Department of Development Planning, Environment & Works over the next three years.
The money will be spent on staff training and assistance in the development of environmental management systems in Gauteng. Both Danish and South African experts will be involved in the project, which will be launched in July 1996.
SCHOOL RENOVATION
The cabinet was also fully briefed on progress which has been made with the RDP Schools Renovation Programme, where R29-million has been spent to repair and renovate schools throughout the province.
An additional R17-million has been earmarked for schools in the Katorus area, as part of the Presidential Lead Project in the area. In addition, R25-million has been allocated from national RDP Funds for capital works programmes.
REPAIRS TO DAMAGED HOUSES
Premier Tokyo Sexwale briefed the cabinet on a donation of one-million bricks by brick manufacturer Corobrik.
The bricks, which will be handed over to the Premier at a special ceremony in Crown Mines tomorrow (Friday 24 November), will be used to repair houses in Meadowlands which were damaged during political violence.
