MOLEFE SUPPORTS PUNITIVE MEASURES AGAINST NIGERIA

Issued by: North West Communication Service

PRESS RELEASE ON NIGERIA

North West Premier Popo Molefe supports the call by President Nelson Mandela for punitive measures including the ban or suspension of oil trade with Nigeria.

The concern of those who have invested in the oil industry in Nigeria is taken note of, but weighs against the feeling of betrayal by the people in Nigeria who are subjected to the despotic rule of the military Junta.

In the same way business concerns had to disinvest and divest from South Africa, during the apartheid administration, in full view of the fact investors were going to be affected adversely, the world needs to realise the same situation of human rights violation is prevalent in Nigeria, and this calls for sacrifice from those who support and wish to champion the course of democracy everywhere in the world.

It is our belief the establishment of democracy in Nigeria will create a favourable condition for trade and investment that will benefit present and future investors in a broad area of investment. The world community needs to realise there should be no excuse to sustain any administration that tramples on the rights of its citizens and human rights broadly.
