Issued by: Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture and Language, Science and Technology
The Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture and Language, Science and Technology, having taken congnisance of all the circumstances surrounding the execution of the celebrated writer and poet, Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other activists declares its total abhorrence of the action taken by the Nigerian regime. The Committee also condemns the regime for proceeding with the execution against a background of appeals for clemency made by world leaders, including President Mandela.
In consequence thereof the Portfolio Committee resolves to ask the President to put in motion all steps which would immediately halt further exchanges and co-operation in the field of Arts and Culture, Science and Technology amongst other things with the Nigerian military dictatorship. The Committee supports the actions taken by the South African government thus far.
This Committee while saddened by Ken Saro Wiwa's untimely death recognises his singular contribution to the Oguni people, to the environment and to humanity as a whole. We mourn his death and cherish his memory.
