MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE RULES BOARD FOR COURTS OF LAW FOLLOWING ON ITS FIRST MEETING ON 14 NOVEMBER 1995

The newly constituted Rules Board which was recently appointed by the Minister of Justice, had its first meeting in Pretoria on Tuesday 14 November 1995.

The Chairman of the Rules Board, Mr Justice R H Zulman, stated that the Rules Board had committed itself to streamlining court procedures with the view to promoting speedy and affordable access to justice. In this regard the Rules Board envisages the introduction of a core set of rules applicable to all courts which will simplify court procedures.

The Rules Board appointed 8 committees to facilitate its work. These committees will report back to the Rules Board in January 1996 on matters such as family court procedures, costs, Supreme and Magistrates' Courts Rules and the rationalization of rules of the former TBVC-states.

The Rules Board cordially invites members of the public and interested parties to make written submissions to it by 1 December 1995 on any matters relating to court rules and procedures. These submissions should be addressed to the Secretary of the Rules Board for Courts of Law, Mr C H Greyvenstein, Private Bag X81, Pretoria, 0001.

The Rules Board consists of the following 12 members:
