PRESS STATEMENT
Mr NG (Elvis) Govender, an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, died in tragic circumstances on Friday, 10 November 1995. The circumstances leading to his death are being investigated by the police.
Mr Govender, whose curriculum vitae follows, was appointed to the Department during October 1995. He was a member of a committee appointed during May 1995 to assist the Department in arranging the selection and appointment of a group of persons who had received diplomatic training in various countries. In this context he had worked very closely with members of the Department's Administration prior to his appointment.
On 6 November, Mr Govender entered the Foreign Service Institute for Diplomatic Training with a view to his eventual stationing abroad.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, 14 November, in Durban.
The Department has extended its sincere condolences to Mr Govender's family.

SURNAME: GOVENDER FIRST NAMES: NITHIANANDAN GANESE DATE OF BIRTH: 1 NOVEMBER 1958 PLACE OF BIRTH: UMZINTO, NATAL PARENTS: MR AND MRS GP GOVENDER OF MEREBANK, DURBAN EDUCATION: PORT SHEPSTONE HIGH SCHOOL AND GRADUATE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DURBAN WESTVILLE WITH A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION DIPLOMA.
Mr Govender undertook research in Education at Princeton University during 1987 and an internship in Community Studies and Management at the National Academy for Voluntarism in Virginia, USA, during 1988. He also completed an advanced course in Diplomacy at Birmingham University in 1993.
Mr Govender was a principle of the pre-school and community organiser at the David Landau Community Centre in Durban from 1985 to 1989.
In 1992 he was employed at the ANC Head Quarters at Shell House in Johannesburg.
Mr Govender joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in October 1995.
