The MEC for Safety and Security, Jessie Duarte, met this morning (Friday) with the Lehlabile Taxi Organisation to discuss their recent application to the Supreme Court to run taxis from the Kort Street rank.
The LTO made me aware that they will be exercising their right to use the rank from the 17th of November.
We agreed that police should be present at the rank at Kort St taxi rank on that day, as we are concerned that the LTO's use of the rank might create some form of conflict.
I gave the LTO an undertaking to ask the police to be present at the rank on the 17th, as the organisation obviously h to operate from Kort Street if they have obtained a court order to this effect.
I must emphasise that our responsibility is towards commuters and taxi drivers, and the police will be there to ensure their safety.
