RELEASE OF LIST OF PERSONS TO BE INTERVIEWED BY THE SELECTION PANEL FOR THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

The panel of persons appointed by the President to short-list the candidates or nominees for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission met yesterday in Johannesburg. The panel has now agreed on a list of 46 nominees who will be invited to be interviewed by the panel. This list of 46 candidates is not the short list as such, but constitutes a list of persons whom the panel would wish to interview in order to obtain a better knowledge of each individual. This list of 46 names is somewhat larger than originally intended. The panel, however, believes that the possibility exists that some of the nominees may yet withdraw their nominations once they appreciate the commitment which will be required of them over the next eighteen months to two years.

This process of interviewing potential Commissioners will commence on 13 November 1995 in Cape Town. Further interviews will take place in Durban and Johannesburg in the same week. The public is hereby invited to submit their views and questions both with regard to the composition of the list and the individual candidates before 11 November 1995.

At yesterday's meeting the Selection Panel selected the Candidates. The 160 emerged from a preliminary selection. The panel was most impressed with the quality of the nominees, many if not all of whom would have graced the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In selecting 46 of these 160, the panel addressed both the "track record" of the nominees as well as the need to ensure that the list is representative of South Africa's population in regard to gender, race, profession and region. The panellists' list, however, still manifests to some degree the bias in regard to these characteristics as contained in the original list of nominees. This issue may receive further consideration at the selection stage.

The panel believes that many of the unsuccessful nominees pos- sess the experience and expertise that will be much needed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It was felt that some of the skills of the nominees could be appropriately utilised by the Commission. We hope they will make themselves available.
