MINISTER OF SAFETY AND SECURITY, SYDNEY MUFAMADI, OCTOBER 30, 1995, PRETORIA.
The Co-Chairperson of the Local Government Election Task Group, Dr F van Zyl Slabbert, has agreed that members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) on duty on November 1, 1995, be given preferential treatment at polling stations.
The rationale for the arrangement is to enable maximum number of police members to be on duty and at the same time enable members to cast their votes immediately and return to their posts.
In the event of long queues it will not be necessary for a police official on duty to waste valuable time standing in the queue.
This arrangement will assist police officials on duty on election day outside their poling districts where they are registered to quickly cast their votes.
All Provincial Representatives of the Task Group have been informed of the priority to be given to police officials by Dr Slabbert.
