IRREGULARITIES AT CUSTOMS CONTROL POST AT BEIT BRIDGE

Following on an investigation by Customs and Excise investigators, the Crime Detection Unit of the South African Police Services this morning arrested eight customs officers at the Beit Bridge Customs Control Post for alleged forgery of export documentation.

The estimated loss of customs duties amounts to R99 million. The officers appeared in the Messina Magistrate' Court at 14:00 and have been released on bail.

The cases have been postponed to 13 December 1995 for trial.

Further investigation into the companies involved are continuing, and steps are also being taken to recover the duties involved.
