Gauteng MEC for Safety and Security Jessie Durate met today with Gauteng Police Commissioner General Sharma Maharaj and all seven area commissioners to discuss and evaluate the impact of the Community Safety Plan since its implementation three months ago.
Each are commissioner presented details of actions taken so far, crime patterns since the inception of the plan and future plans. The discussion was frank. Problems were examined openly in an atmosphere of shared commitment to beating the deadly crime epidemic in Gauteng.
In some aspects, figures showed, the Community Safety Plan has yielded encouraging results. Relevant figures were presented by each area commissioner and they will be released to the media once they have been compiled in a user-friendly form.
All present at the meeting rated car hijacking as the priority in combatting crime in Gauteng. Area commissioners have already formulated action plans to fight hijacking but they were asked to reassess and find ways of reinforcing action in this area.
The SANDF is already being deployed in a crime-fighting role on the East Rand and the Vaal. Today Johannesburg's Area Commissioner, General Frans Malherbe, announced that he would request the SANDF's support in the area under his control.
