WATER SUPPLY SITUATION IN ORANGE RIVER SYSTEM EVALUATED 23 OCTOBER 1995

Due to the prevailing drought in the Orange River System catchment, the low dam levels in the system are still a cause for concern, said Prof Kader Asmal, MP, Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry.

The situation of the Orange River System has therefore been carefully analysed and although three very bad seasons of runoff were experienced in the last four years, sufficient water is currently in storage and no restrictions are required until April 1996. However, Prof Asmal urged consumers to promote and apply voluntary water conservattion in the Orange River System will be reviewed in March 1996.
