PRESS STATEMENT BY NORTH WEST PREMIER POPO MOLEFE ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA - OCTOBER 19 1995

The Premier of the North West Province Mr Popo Molefe today (Thursday) commended all parties and constituencies throughout South Africa for the position they have taken regarding corruption in the former Bantustans and the former National Party Government.

In particular, Premier Molefe congratulated President Nelson Mandela for the courageous and decisive step he has taken in setting up a commission to address corruption in the former Bantustans and the former National Party Government.

"I have always maintained that the present government of National Unity can and will only be able to deliver if the cancer of corruption is rooted out.

"Commissions set up to root out corruption are not targeting any particular individual, but operate under the principle that corruption is illegal and against the dictates of the new South Africa," Premier Molefe said.

In congratulating the President, Mr Molefe also offered whatever assistance necessary in light of the experience of the North West Government.

The leads already contained in The Skweyiya findings are at the disposal of the President's Commission.

The Premier also thanked his colleagues in other Provinces as well as the International Community for the many messages of support he has received.
