STATEMENT ON THE TAXI BLOCKADE

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PREMIER ON THE TAXI BLOCKADE

The Premier's Office condemns the Letlhabile Taxi Organisation's blockade of Johannesburg International Airport.

The LTO is causing great inconvenience to the public, particularly to travellers on their way to different parts of the world, those involved in the transportation of goods, children who are going schoo, people who are going to hospitals, and various emergency services.

It is totally unacceptable to inconvenience the public in this manner, for whatever reason.

The LTO's disruptions will make a mockery of their problems.

The Premier's Office is, at this moment, liaising with national Transport Minister Mac Maharaj, provincial Transport Minister Olaus van Zyl, and other relevant parties to try to resolve this crisis without delay.

In the meantime, the police have been instructed to do all they can to clear the roads around Johannesburg International. Over and above this, we have asked the SANDF to assist the police in this regard, by removing vehicles which are blocking access roads.

Finally, we appeal to members of the public to avoid the airport area so that they do not create further problems.
