CONTINUATION OF THE HEARINGS PERTAINING TO THE PROSECUTING AUTHORITIES IN SOUTH AFRICA BY THE COMMITTEES ON JUSTICE OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND SENATE OF PARLIAMENT

FIRST RESOLUTION

Our committees are extremely concerned about the high levels of serious crime in many parts of our country, and in particular, the serious crisis that exists in the criminal justice system in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, both in relation to the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes, including those crimes arising out of alleged political violence.

We therefore resolved to call upon the Ministers of Justice and Safety and Security to investigate the situation immediately, and to take urgent steps to deal with this crisis in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

This resolution was adopted unanimously by the Political Parties present: ANC, NP, IFP, FF and PAC.

SECOND RESOLUTION

Our Committees further resolved to adopt the following programme of action, which would lead to the adoption of a First Report by the Committees, in relation to the public hearings, held on 26-28 September and 12-13 October 1995, in respect of the eleven prosecuting authorities in our country, for tabling in the respective Houses of Parliament, at its next sitting:

1. each party must table their submissions to the Committee Section of Parliament, on or before Friday 10 November 1995;

2. a Draft Report will be tabled by the Chairpersons of the Committees, with the Committee, Section of Parliament, on or before Friday 17 November 1995, for circulation to members of both Committees; and

3. the Report will discussed and adopted at a joint meeting of the Committees, in Cape Town, on Wednesday 29 November 1995.

This resolution was adopted unanimously by the Political Parties present: ANC, NP, IFP, FF and AC.
