APPOINTMENT OF A MEDIATOR TO RESOLVE DISPUTE

Issued by: MINISTRY OF LABOUR

2 October 1995

PRESS STATEMENT: STATUTORY MEDIATION: APPOINTMENT OF A MEDIATOR TO RESOLVE THE DISPUTE IN THE MUNICIPAL SECTOR

After consultations with representatives of the parties involved in the dispute in the municipal sector, I have decided to use statutory mediation in terms of section 44 of the Labour Relations Act (1956) to facilitate a speedy resolution of the dispute.

I have appointed one of South Africa's leading mediators, Mr Charles Nupen, to mediate in the dispute. The mediation process is scheduled to start tomorrow morning. (Tues) Mr Nupen has already begun to study the issues relating to the dispute.

Both employers and the union have indicated a willingness to reach a settlement and would participate in the mediation effort with this serious intention.

I am confident that statutory mediation would succeed and an agreement reached within the next few days.
