Issued by: Constitutional Assembly
Cape Town, 28 September 1995
The Sub-Committee of the Constitutional Committee has agreed that the present flag will not be changed when the final constitution is implemented.
With the exception of the Pan Africanist Congress, which submitted that a new flag should be designed, all the parties represented at the Constitutional Assembly (CA) accepted the present flag. The Inkatha Freedom Party's view on the matter is not known as the party is not taking part in the CA process.
The Sub-Committee referred the question of the national anthem to bilateral negotiations among the various political parties.
CA Chairperson and Deputy-Chairperson, Cyril Ramaphosa and Leon Wessels, respectively, were mandated to consult Cabinet and the Speaker of Parliament to establish the role they are playing regarding this matter.
They will report to the Constitutional Committee at its next meeting on 19 and 20 October 1995.
The Sub-Committee is meeting in Cape Town until 18h00 today.
It is discussing the subjects of Judiciary, Independent Institutions, National Executive, Electoral System, Constitutional Amendments and National and Provincial Executive and Legislative Competencies. The meeting is scheduled to adjourn at 18h00, today.
