STATEMENT BY MR DULLAH OMAR MP, MINISTER OF JUSTICE, ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW RULES BOARD FOR COURTS OF LAW

I am happy to announce the names of the new appointees to the Rules Board as appended.

The Rules Board is the body charged with the task of making the necessary rules to ensure the efficient, speedy and uniform administrationwer courts. The newly appointed Board has a full programme and will, over the coming period, be establishing rules for family courts, senior civil divisions as well as amending the rules of magistrates' courts and the Supreme Court. Aspects relating to the referral of matters to the Constitutional Court also require its consideration.

The administration of family matters, maintenance and other problems facing members of the public will be considered by the Board. Of particular concern is the question of maintenance which requires urgent attention. Many mothers suffer great inconvenience and hardship due to the fact that they do not receive maintenance payments regularly or reliably. Our law and rules must be geared to intervene in this unhappy situation.

The newly constituted Board will work within the broader vision of access to justice. Its mandate, therefore, is to consider the rules within the framework of the needs and experience of citizens who approach the courts every day. Its eventual aim should be the creation of a justice administration that is friendly, accessible and readily available to its users.
