MEDIA STATEMENT BY DR D J DE VILLIERS, MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM

APPOINTMENT OF PERSON TO HEAD THE INDEPENDENT ENQUIRY INTO THE ISSUING OF A PERMIT FOR THE IMPORT OF DANGEROUS WASTE

Issued by: The Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism

In a press statement issued on 8 September 1995, the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Dr Dawie de Villiers, has announced that an independent enquiry into the issuing of a permit of the import of dangerous waste would soon commence. The Regional Court President of Pretoria, Mr Jan Venter, was therefore today appointed by Dr de Villiers to lead an investigation into the facts and circumstances regarding the issuing of a permit to import a consignment of cupric arsenite into South Africa.

The above announcement follows the undertaking by the Minister that he would ensure that all legal and administrative aspects pertaining to the implementation of the Basel Convention would be investigated thoroughly. The decision to launch a one-man investigation is based on the fact that there is no justification for appointing a Commission of Enquiry at great expense to look into an administrative process.

Organisations and individuals are invited to submit any evidence on the matter to Mr Venter's address at Private Bag X61, Pretoria, 0001.
