TOUGH MEASURES PLANNED FOR KWAZULU NATAL, EASTERN CAPE AND GAUTENG

Minister for Safety and Security Mr Sydney Mufamadi and the Minister for Defence Mr Joe Modise today summoned the Commissioner of the SA Police Services Gen George Fivaz and the Chief of the SANDF Gen George Meiring to a meeting to examine the security situation in various parts of KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape and Gauteng.

The meeting focused on various areas of the above-mentioned provinces where violent crimes continue to occur with unacceptable frequency and gravity.

Both Ministers resolved that, as a matter of urgency, the strength of the security forces operating in these areas will be substantially increased with immediate effect.

It is the view of both Ministers that implementation of this measure will produce effective action resulting in:

• Greater protection and security for citizens residing in the affected areas and
• The apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the violence.
