President Nelson Mandela announced that Mr Geoffrey Michael Budlender had been appointed Chairperson and the only member of a Commission of Inquiry into Alleged Irregularities or Malpractices regarding the Allocation, Leasing, Alienation and Transfer of Certain State Land.
The Budlender Commission was appointed as a result of alarming allegations of corruption or irregularities in respect of the disposal of state land situated in, inter alia the formerTBVC States. Therefore the Commission will investigate alleged irregularities which occured during the period 1 January 1992 to 1 January 1995.

Mr Budlender is an attorney and the National Director of the Legal Resources Centre. He is currently on sabbatical leave from the Legal Resources Centre and is spending the period working as an advisor to Minister Hanekom.
