Issued by: Office of the President
The President has taken note of the decision of the Constitutional Court that the imposition of the Death Penalty is incompatible with the right to life as enshrined in the Bill of Fundamental Rights in our Constitution.
We are sure that, this decision, taken by a respected body independent of the Executive reflects a sober and humane consideration of the issue, and it is in line with contemporary civilised norms. The President would, however, wish to study the judgement before commenting further, and would also wish the Cabinet to have an opportunity of considering the judgement.
The President also wishes to emphasise that this decision has no bearing on the commitment of the Government to tackle the problem of crime, and particularly violent crime, with all the resources and determination it can muster.
