Registered by NSB 11, Services, publishes the following unit standards-based qualifications for public comment.
This notice contains the titles, fields, sub-fields, NOF levels, credits, and purposes of the qualifications, and the titles and specific outcomes of the unit standards upon which qualifications are based. The full qualifications and unit standards can be accessed via the SAQA web-site at www.saqa.co.za. Copies may also be obtained from the Directorate of Standards Setting and Development at the SAGA offices, 659 Pienaar street, Brooklyn, Pretoria.

In the context of the guiding sector, this qualification will enable the creation of innovative and exciting guided experiences. A qualifying learner will be able to contribute positively towards the guiding ,sector as a part of Southern Africa's tourism industry. A learner who has achieved this qualification will be capable of combining a range of life-long learning 7kills and a knowledge of South African tourism issues, integrating these within a context to produce multi-skilled guiding practices. In addition they will be positioned to further their learning, practice and career within the guiding sector - either at further levels or in other areas of practice. Expansion into other sectors of tourism is also possible. |

| Specific outcome 1: | Navigate a group through a limited
geographical area. (Range: In all weather conditions, choose the most appropriate and safest route between entry and exit points, accurately communicate their position to others, estimate walking time between two defined points, in restricted visibility conditions.) |
| Specific outcome 2: | Complete all relevant administrative
procedures. (Range: Obtain the relevant permits, update the rescue register, pay entry fees and other levies, log their mountain walking experience, report on the mountain walking experience.) |
| Specific outcome 3: | Identify and respond to local hazards. (Range: Local weather, flooding, lightning, fire, rock falls and landslides, potentially dangerous animals and plants such as snakes, altitude related illness specific to the geographic area.) |
| Specific outcome 4: | Lead, organise and manage a group with
respect to: (Range: Safety, setting up camp, environmental preservation considerations, equipment, Bivouac procedures, group and personal hygiene, group control, food and nutrition, walking pace and route selection.) |

(Range: Choose appropriate and suitable venues, choose suitable takeoff and landing areas, set up fixed and releasable abseils, perform releasable abseil techniques, choose suitable anchors and connect the equipment to them, comply with access requirements, identify holding areas, choose and care for a variety of suitable equipment, perform safety checks and identify safe approaches.) |

(Range: Demonstrate competent, safe and assured techniques and leadership on snow and ice, control a party's ascent & descent on snow and ice, demonstrate techniques of winter camp craft & survival, demonstrate care and leadership for a party on difficult terrain including short rope techniques, navigate with speed and efficiency in extreme winter conditions, respond to winter hazards.) |

rescue. (Range: Demonstrate use of mountain rescue equipment, assess an accident scene and implement appropriate action, perform a variety of lifts and lowers including horizontal and vertical carry outs, handle casualties and oversee safe movement and security of a mountain rescue team.) |

mountaineering. (Range: Opening new routes, development of new knowledge and resources, expansion of the field of mountaineering, research and record mountaineering related information.) |

pertaining to a canyoneering/kloofing experience. (Range: Access permits, fees, registers and transport, communication systems and channels, administer legalities insurances, group information and history, organise catering, equipment and other technical support, consult with group to assess needs, capabilities and experience, care and maintenance in accordance with manufacturers & field requirements, select equipment appropriate to the activity and environment, demonstrate a knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment, observe guide to client ratios.) |

range of conditions. (Range: Setting and reviewing targets, positive decision making, appropriate delegation, application of flexible leadership styles, exert proper group control and discipline by good group communication, provide safe and rewarding experience for each group member, impart technical skills and environmental awareness.) |

(Range: Move a group over difficult terrain, respond to local hazards, river crossings, move over steep terrain, campsite selection and organisation, food preparation, planning and coordination, personal and group hygiene, Bivouac skills, environmental preservation considerations, apply a variety of walking skills.) |

(Range: Use conventional navigation equipment and techniques, calculate time and distances over ground with high level of accuracy, navigate efficiently in restricted visibility, route planning & recording, demonstrate methods of relocation, use terrain association & dead reckoning navigation.) |
