SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY (SAQA)

PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL, COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES TO ESTABLISH A STANDARDS GENERATING BODY (SGB) FOR EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCES, AND EARTH RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING.

National Standards Body (NSB) 10 - Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - wishes to establish an SGB in the sub-field Earth and Space Sciences, and Earth Resources Management at NQF Levels 5 - 8. The SGB will develop appropriate and specific standards and qualifications for Earth and Space Sciences, and Earth Resources Management learning, with regard to the following: technicians, technologists, analysts, scientists and researchers. Fields covered would range through geology, geophysics, geography, meteorology, climatology, hydrological science, astronomy and planetary science, soil science and mineral resource -management. This list indicates the range but is by no means exhaustive.

Proposed brief of the SGB

  1. Collate the various qualifications that have been developed in the sub-field to identify the core competencies embedded within them [Regulation 24(1)(a)]. In the first instance, a generalist approach will be followed, but requirements for specific qualifications will be taken into account.
  2. Design learning pathways for HET practice within the learning pathways for the field [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
  3. Generate the following qualifications for earth scientists in HET at Levels 5 - 8 with reference to the roles and specialisations described above:
  1. Recommend the standards and qualifications under 3 above to the National Standards Body [Regulation 24(1)(c)].
  2. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating -bodies (Regulation 24(1)(d)].
  3. Perform such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the NSB (Regulation 24(1)(e)].
  4. The SGB would operate in the sub-field Earth Sciences and would liase closely with other relevant SGBs in the field as well as in other organising fields.

COMPOSITION OF THE SGB

It is proposed that key education and training stakeholders in the sub-field drawn from interest groups and specialists would comprise nominations from:
