GENERAL NOTICE

Notice 944 of 2000

INVESTIGATION BY THE NATIONAL DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT AS TO WHETHER GAUTENG REQUIRES A THIRD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Notice was published in the Government Gazette dated 1 October 1999 calling for interested parties to submit written comments, either for or against, designation of a third airport in Gauteng as an international entry point.

The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate whether a requirement exists for a third international airport for the Gauteng Province.

Fifty-eight written submissions were received from interested parties. The parties include, amongst others, City Councils, Airports, NIDS, ATNS, ACSA, Flight Operators, Industries, Developers, Gauteng Department of Health, Eskom, Business Chambers, Consultants as well as private individuals.

An analysis of the submissions revealed that the objective of the study had been misunderstood to mean that arguments be presented in support of a specific airport rather than addressing the question of whether a third entry point was needed.

The investigation team will only consider facts which are either in support of or against the designation of a third international entry point, and will therefore include matters relating to amongst others, traffic density, traffic volumes, capacity growth, airspace capacity and safety considerations.

All relevant submissions will be carefully considered before a decision is made on the way forward. As so many of the representations submitted misinterpreted the question posed, the National Department of Transport will permit further representations addressing whether a requirement exists for a third international airport for Gauteng, which representations should be submitted no later than 15 April 2000.

Any further comments or representations with regard to the requirement for a third international airport for Gauteng, should be lodged with the National Department of Transport, for attention: Mr Kim Gorringe, Private Bag X193, Pretoria, 0001, Fax no. (012) 323 7007 or e-mail at gorringek@ndot.pwv.gov.za, on 15 April 2000.
