PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 09, HEALTH SCIENCES AND SOCIAL SERVICES, OF THE REGISTRATION OF AN SGB FOR OPTOMETRY AND OPTICIANRY

NSB 09 hereby registers an SGB for Optometry and Opticiaory for a period of three years, until 26 June 2003.

BRIEF OF THE SGB

  1. Provide the South African health system with specific training in eye-care to meet the eye-care needs of the country at all levels of care [Regulation 24 (1) (e)].

  2. Ensure that practising professionals fulfil the requirements for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa [Regulation 24 (1) (e)].

  3. Generate the following unit standards-based qualifications in accordance with Authority requirements at NQF levels 5 to 8:

  1. Recommend the qualifications and pathways in 1 and 3 above to NSB O9[Regulation 24 (1) (c)].

  2. Review and update the proposed and subsequent qualifications and standards in Optometry and Opticianry, as required [Regulation 24 (1) (b)].

  3. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].

  4. Perform such other functions as may from time to time be delegated by NSB 09 (Health Sciences and Social Services) [Regulation 24 (1)(e)].
