GENERAL NOTICE

Notice 730 of 2000

NSB 09 hereby registers an SGB for Optometry and Opticiaory for a period of three years, until 26 June 2003.

BRIEF OF THE SGB

1. Provide the South African health system with specific training in eye-care to meet the eye-care needs of the country at all levels of care [Regulation 24 (1) (e)].

2. Ensure that practising professionals fulfil the requirements for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa [Regulation 24 (1) (e)].

3. Generate the following unit standards-based qualifications in accordance with Authority requirements at NQF levels 5 to 8:

• National Diploma in Optical Dispensing (Level 5)
• First Degrees in Optometry (Level 6)
• Masters Degree in Optometry: Clinical (Level 8)
• Doctoral Degree in Optometry: Clinical (Level 8) [Regulation 24 (1) (a)].

4. Recommend the qualifications and pathways in 1 and 3 above to NSB O9[Regulation 24 (1) (c)].

5. Review and update the proposed and subsequent qualifications and standards in Optometry and Opticianry, as required [Regulation 24 (1) (b)].

6. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].

7. Perform such other functions as may from time to time be delegated by NSB 09 (Health Sciences and Social Services) [Regulation 24 (1)(e)].
