SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY

PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL, COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES, OF THE INTENTION TO REGISTER AN SGB FOR MATHEMATICAL LITERACY, MATHEMATICS AND MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

National Standards Body (NSB) 10 – Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences – intends to establish an SGB for Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences (MLMMS) at NQF level 1 including Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET Level 4). This SGB will liaise with all the relevant SGBs in the field.

PROPOSED BRIEF OF THE SGB

  1. Review the NQF level 1 (ABET Level 4) standards in Numeracy developed by the ABET National Stakeholder Forum and generate standards in the light of this review [Regulation 24(1)(b)].

  2. Generate standards in Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences leading towards a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) at NQF level 1, in accordance with Authority requirements [Regulation, 24(1)(a)].

  3. Recommend the standards generated under 2 above to the NSB [Regulation, 24(1)(c)].

  4. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation, 24(1)(d)].

  5. Accept and perform other Mathematical Literacy, Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences SGB-related functions as requested by NSB 10 [Regulation, 24(1)(e).
