SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY

PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL, COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES, OF THE INTENTION TO REGISTER AN SGB FOR NATURAL SCIENCES IN FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING

National Standards Body (NSB) 10 – Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences – wishes to establish an SGB for Natural Sciences in the sub-fields Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth & Space Sciences and Environmental Sciences at NQF Levels 2 – 4. The Natural Sciences is a central area of learning at FET level, where learners will have the opportunity to specialise in various areas of the Natural Sciences which will enhance their quality of life. An integrated understanding of Natural Sciences and the development of scientific literacy are also important. This qualification could lead to Natural Sciences studies in the Higher Education and Training Band.

PROPOSED BRIEF OF THE SGB

  1. Identify, in consultation with other initiatives in NSB 10, the integration, quality and equity issues of relevance to the sub-field [Regulation 24(1)(e)].

  2. Generate standards and qualifications (Certificates) in the Natural Sciences in the sub-fields Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth & Space Sciences and Environmental Sciences in accordance with Authority requirements [Regulation 24(1)(a)]. The SGB will develop appropriate and specific standards for Natural Science learners at NQF Levels 2 – 4 which will culminate in a Further Education and Training Certificate.

  3. Recommend the standards and qualifications under 2 above to the National Standards Body [Regulation 24(1)(c)].

  4. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].

  5. Liaise closely with other relevant SGBs in the sub-fields of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth & Space Sciences and Environmental Sciences in the generation of qualifications and standards [Regulation 24(1)(a & e)].

  6. Perform such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the NSB [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
