PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL,COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES, OF THE INTENTION TO REGISTER AN SGB FOR NATURAL SCIENCES IN GENERAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (GET) AND ADULT BASIC EDUCATION AND TRAINING (ABET) |
National Standards Body (NSB) 10 Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences wishes to establish an SGB for Natural Sciences in the sub-fields Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences and Environmental Sciences at NQF Level 1. The Natural Sciences is a central learning area, both at GET and ABET levels. At the GET/ABET level the area of Natural Sciences is integrated and holistic and strives to develop all learners into scientifically literate citizens with a good grasp of scientific concepts, skills, attitudes and values that enable them to use and value the natural sciences in their everyday lives.
PROPOSED BRIEF OF THE SGB
Identify, in consultation with other initiatives in NSB 10, the integration, quality and equity issues of relevance to the sub-field [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
Generate standards in Natural Sciences in accordance with Authority requirements [Regulation 24(1)(a)]. The SGB will develop appropriate and specific standards for Natural Sciences which will contribute towards a General Education and Training Certificate at NQF level 1. In the process of standards generation, the SGB will
- consider the way in which standards will accommodate the different paths of ABET and GET learners
- investigate the weight that Natural Sciences should carry within the GETC; and
- consider the relevance of core, fundamental and elective components within the Natural Science requirements for the GETC.
Recommend the standards generated under 2 above to the National Standards Body [Regulation 24(1)(c)].
Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].
Liase closely with other relevant SGBs in the sub-fields of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth & Space Sciences and Environmental Sciences in the generation of standards [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
Perform such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the NSB [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
