SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY

PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL, COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES, OF THE INTENTION TO REGISTER AN SGB FOR PHYSICS IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING (HET)

NSB 10 - Physical, Mathematical, Compueter and Life Sciences - wishes to establish an SGB for Physics in Higher Educatoin and Training (HET).

Proposed brief of the SGB

  1. Identify, in consultation with other initiatives in NSB 10 and other relevant NSBs/SGBs, the integration, quality and equity issues of relevance to the sub-field Physical Sciences, which incorporates Chemistry, Physics, Aviation Sciences and aspects of Environmental Sciences, Food Sciences and Polymer Sciences [Regulation 24(1)(e)].

  2. Generate qualifications and standards for physics and astronomy in the sub-field Physical Sciences in accordance with Authority requirements [Regulation 24(1)(a)]. The SGB will develop appropriate and specific standards and qualifications for Physics learning, with reference to the roles of technician, technologist, analyst, physicist, scientist, and researcher. The qualifications to be generated will include the Certificate in Physics (Level 5), Diploma in Physics (Level 5), First Degree in Physics (Level 6), Masters Degree in Physics (Level 7), and Doctoral Degree in Physics (Level 8).

  3. Recommend the qualifications and standards under 2 above to the National Standards Body [Regulation 24(1)(c)].

  4. Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].

  5. Liaise closely with other relevant SGBs in the field as well as in other organising fields in the generation of qualifications and standards [Regulation 24(1)(a & e)].
