SOUTH AFRICAN QUALIFICATIONS AUTHORITY
PUBLIC NOTICE BY NSB 10, PHYSICAL, MATHEMATICAL, COMPUTER AND LIFE SCIENCES, OF THE INTENTION TO REGISTER AN SGB FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES AND MANAGEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING (HET) |
National Standards Body (NSB) 10 Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences wishes to establish an SGB in the sub-field Environmental Sciences at NQF Levels 5 8.
The SGB will develop appropriate and specific standards and qualifications for Environmental Sciences learning, with reference to the roles of technician, technologist, analyst, scientist and researcher. Learning areas in the Environmental Sciences range widely and would include the following: ecology, pollution and waste management, marine science, oceanography, archaeology, palaeontology, environmental management and natural resource management. This list is by no means exhaustive.
Proposed Brief of the SGB
Collate the various qualifications that have been developed in the sub-field to identify the core competencies embedded within them [Regulation 24(1)(a)]. In the first instance, a generalist approach will be followed, but requirements for specific qualifications will be taken into account.
Design learning pathways for HET practice within the learning pathways for the field [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
Generate the following qualifications for environmental scientists in HET at Levels 5 8 with reference to the roles and specialisations described above, in accordance with Authority requirements [Regulation 24(1)(a)]:
- National Certificate in Environmental Sciences (Level 5)
- National Diploma in Environmental Sciences (Level 6)
- First Degree in Environmental Sciences (Level 6)
- Masters degree in Environmental Sciences and Management (Level 7)
- Doctoral degree in Environmental Sciences and Management (Level 8).
Recommend the qualifications under 3 above to the National Standards Body [Regulation 24(1)(c)].
Recommend criteria for the registration of assessors and moderators or moderating bodies [Regulation 24(1)(d)].
Perform such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the NSB [Regulation 24(1)(e)].
Liaise closely with other relevant SGBs in the sub-field in the generation of qualifications [Regulation 24(1)(a & e)].
