HIGHER EDUCATION ACT,1997 (ACT No. 101 OF 1997)

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR FOUR ORDINARY MEMBERS FOR THE COUNCIL ON HIGHER EDUCATION (CHE)

I, Professor Kader Asmal, MP, Minister of Education, hereby request from—

  1. the public;
  2. national organisations representing higher education students, academic employees, employees other than academic employees, university principals, technikon principals, principals of colleges of education, other higher education colleges, private higher education institutions, the further education sector, the distance education sector, educators, organised business, organised labour;
  3. research and science councils; and
  4. relevant non-governmental organisations,

the names of persons who by virtue of their knowledge and experience, may be considered for appointment as members of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) to fill the four vacancies in the Council's membership.

The CHE is a major statutory body established to provide independent, strategic advice to the Minister of Education on matters relating to the transformation and development of higher education in South Africa, and to manage quality assurance and quality promotion in the higher education sector.

Members will be appointed in their personal capacities and will be expected to apply their minds to the interests of the whole sector.

To ensure compliance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act, preference will be given to women.

Nominations, accompanied by the Curriculum Vitae of the nominee and a letter of consent indicating the availability of the nominee to serve on the Council on Higher Education if selected, should be forwarded before 26 May 2000 to:
